Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars 3D

Rich environments and diverse abilities fuel the accessible tactical depth that makes Shadow Wars a winner.

Super Mokey Ball 3D

After numerous iterations of the Super Monkey Ball formula, which got its start on the GameCube almost 10 years ago, AiAi and crew have had a bumpy ride. While none of their adventures since their console debut have quite stacked up to the original, Super Monkey Ball 3D is the closet this series has gotten to recapturing its former glory.

LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars

This familiar Lego-themed adventure has flashy 3D effects, but predictable gameplay and a lack of challenge keep it from flying high.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3DS

After a nightmare involving a certain young princess and the evil thief Ganondorf, series hero Link wakes up in his home village tucked away behind the mysterious Lost Woods. The only Kokiri without a fairy, Link soon meets up with his new traveling companion, the winged Navi, and sets out on the adventure of his life.

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D

Breaking out one of the favorite modes in Capcom's horror survival series into its own intense game experience, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D delivers relentless action set in the Resident Evil universe with players competing against the clock to defeat as many enemies as possible in a set time.

Green Lantern Box Art
Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters is inspired by the feature film, which brings the enduringly popular DC hero to the big screen. Playing as gifted pilot Hal Jordan -- the first human Green Lantern -- gamers create an arsenal of ring constructs and take flight in outer space and beyond to restore intergalactic order. Use the Power Ring to build an array of weapons from green energy to defeat the Manhunters -- an evil android race bent on destroying the Green Lantern Corps.
Genre: Action
Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive
Developer: Griptonite Games
Release Date: June 7, 2011

E10+ for Everyone 10+: Fantasy Violence

Just the other week, I went and saw every version of Captain America: Super Soldier. Wii, PS3, 360 -- you name it, and I saw it. However, when I sat down and wrote about the experience, I was only excited about one of them. The Nintendo DS version of Cap was cool. It was 2D, bright and a throwback to classic comic games.

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters is another cool superhero handheld game -- this time on the 3DS -- and it's no surprise as it's from Griptonite Games, the same developer behind Cap on DS. Before we go any further, I couldn't get the 3D working because the system was anchored to a table.
In brightest day...
In brightest day...
If for some reason you don't know what Green Lanterns are, they're basically the galaxy's police force. The known universe is broken up into sectors, and each sector has a Green Lantern, a hero who can create objects made of light from his or her power ring, fly and beat the hell out of bad guys.

In Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters, we're Hal Jordan -- there are no other playable Lanterns but expect alternate costumes -- and Manhunters are invading Planet Oa, the Green Lantern Corps. home base. Using Hal's power ring, it's up to us to stop the bad guys and save the day.

The action here is similar to Griptonite's other DS titles, and that's good. We move Hal across the screen with the 3DS nub, blast bad guys with the ring, and double jump to fly. From the air, Hal can use his ring to drop an anchor or car to crush foes. By swirling on the touchscreen, we can scan enemies to discover their weaknesses. Tapping icons on the touchscreen creates special constructs like a massive gun or bomb and then takes time to recharge.

In short, it's a simple side-scroller where we're out to save the day. I like that. I thought Iron Man 2 on the PlayStation 3 was lackluster, but being Tony Stark in the Griptonite DS version was simple and fun. The same thing can be said about those Captain America demos.

Sure, I want full-fledged Cap and Iron Man games that have the depth of Batman: Arkham City, but when you're dealing with movie tie-ins, it seems like that's impossible to do. So, I'd rather have an old school-esque take on a movie license than a game that tries to be epic on consoles but fall short due to a rushed production schedule. Griptonite keeps its games simple, and that makes them shine when the console part stumbles.

In blackest night...
In blackest night...
Now, at the moment, the Green Lantern game actually seems to be the opposite scenario of the movie tie-ins I just talked about. I dug the 3DS version, but I'm more excited for the PS3 version of Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters. Like I said in that preview, the PS3 version looks good and is fun -- it doesn't feel cheap or phoned in. As a DC fanboy, that gets me excited. Perhaps that excitement is a product of me realizing Griptonite makes the same -- albeit fun -- superhero game or maybe it's me just stupidly believing the HD Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters has a chance at being good.

Even if my hopes are crushed when the PS3 game comes out on June 7, 2011, a least I know there will be another solid, fun Griptonite game on the same day that's ready to lift my spirits.

What about you? When you hear about a movie game, do you just write it off? Do you care about the handheld versions of these tie-ins? Let me know in the comments below.
