E10+ for Everyone 10+: Fantasy Violence
Just the other week, I went and saw every version of Captain America: Super Soldier. Wii, PS3, 360 -- you name it, and I saw it. However, when I sat down and wrote about the experience, I was only excited about one of them. The Nintendo DS version of Cap was cool. It was 2D, bright and a throwback to classic comic games.
Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters is another cool superhero handheld game -- this time on the 3DS -- and it's no surprise as it's from Griptonite Games, the same developer behind Cap on DS. Before we go any further, I couldn't get the 3D working because the system was anchored to a table.
In Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters, we're Hal Jordan -- there are no other playable Lanterns but expect alternate costumes -- and Manhunters are invading Planet Oa, the Green Lantern Corps. home base. Using Hal's power ring, it's up to us to stop the bad guys and save the day.
The action here is similar to Griptonite's other DS titles, and that's good. We move Hal across the screen with the 3DS nub, blast bad guys with the ring, and double jump to fly. From the air, Hal can use his ring to drop an anchor or car to crush foes. By swirling on the touchscreen, we can scan enemies to discover their weaknesses. Tapping icons on the touchscreen creates special constructs like a massive gun or bomb and then takes time to recharge.
In short, it's a simple side-scroller where we're out to save the day. I like that. I thought Iron Man 2 on the PlayStation 3 was lackluster, but being Tony Stark in the Griptonite DS version was simple and fun. The same thing can be said about those Captain America demos.
Sure, I want full-fledged Cap and Iron Man games that have the depth of Batman: Arkham City, but when you're dealing with movie tie-ins, it seems like that's impossible to do. So, I'd rather have an old school-esque take on a movie license than a game that tries to be epic on consoles but fall short due to a rushed production schedule. Griptonite keeps its games simple, and that makes them shine when the console part stumbles.
Even if my hopes are crushed when the PS3 game comes out on June 7, 2011, a least I know there will be another solid, fun Griptonite game on the same day that's ready to lift my spirits.
What about you? When you hear about a movie game, do you just write it off? Do you care about the handheld versions of these tie-ins? Let me know in the comments below.
