Capcom's juggernaut, the Resident Evil series, always makes it a point to blast its way onto the hottest new systems, and the Nintendo 3DS is no exception. Not to be confused with Resident Evil: Revelations, which is a completely new entry bearing similarities to the core titles in the survival horror franchise,Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is a completely different experience. Confused? Worry not-- we've got all the details you need right here.
What is Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D?
Capcom has taken the action-packed Mercenaries modes of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5 and expanded them into a full retail release on the 3DS. Like RE4 and RE5 before it, this arcade-style, action/horror hybrid is a zombie shooter with a behind-the-back view.
How do you play?
There's no single-player campaign or story mode, but you'll still be leading a famous Resident Evil character of your choice through highly detailed environments, running for your life via the circle pad and busting caps in zombie heads in an attempt to survive until the timer runs out. This time around you can switch into a first-person perspective while aiming or stick with the traditional, over-the-shoulder viewpoint. You're also able to move while aiming at a fixed point.
What's new in the game?
Capcom is adding the concept of skills to Mercenaries, allowing players to mix and match up to 30 different abilities. These powers range from reducing weapon reload times to enabling electric melee attacks. Proper combinations can change the way the game is played, and abilities can be upgraded up to three times to unlock even more potent enhancements.
Who can I play as?
The full roster of characters includes Albert Wesker, Chris Redfield, Hunk, Krauser, Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield.
Is there multiplayer?
Mercenaries will support local and Wi-Fi connections for up to two players.
How does it play?
With the addition of skill slots, Mercenaries is starting to feel a bit different from its mini-game predecessors. That said, your enjoyment of this game is likely to be based on how much you value story in the Resident Evil franchise. If you're looking for more on Umbrella's quest to take over the world, keep on looking. But if you want crazed, zombie-killing action, you'll probably be fine.
Where's that other Resident Evil title for the 3DS?
Resident Evil: Revelations is definitely a 2012 title. That said, Capcom is including a mighty tempting bonus in its Mercenaries package – a demo of Revelations. We don't have details on the size or scope of the demo, but here's hoping we get a good sample of the game, which is described as a direct sequel to Resident Evil 5.
When does it release?
Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is currently slated to release early summer 2011.
